The cover complete, I was instructed to upload a PDF of the book itself, with guidelines for the page size, table of contents, page numbers, and other design elements. Reformatting the original Word document took some time, and I did so with the strange awareness that, in all likelihood, no one would ever see it printed on paper unless I bought a copy myself. Upon submitting the text, I got an email from Holmes, telling me it would soon undergo a “technical verification.” My book was assigned its own unique ISBN: 978-3-659-46676-2. I had finally achieved my lifetime dream of becoming a published author.

Wetzel researches the intersection of American religion, politics, and intellectual life in the period from 1860 to 1920. He has published articles in  The Journal of Church and State  and  The Journal of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era . He is currently at work on two book-length projects. The first, based on his revised dissertation, is tentatively titled  American Crusade: Lyman Abbott and the Christian Nation at War, 1860–1920 . It explores how America’s Christian communities debated the righteousness of the Civil War, Spanish-American War, and World War I. The second, under advance contract with Oxford University Press, is a religious biography titled  Theodore Roosevelt: Preaching from the Bully Pulpit . Wetzel earned his bachelor of arts in history from Grove City College, his master’s degree in history from Baylor University, and his . in history from the University of Notre Dame.

In the Philippines, an academic thesis is named by the degree, such as bachelor/undergraduate thesis or masteral thesis. However, in Philippine English , the term doctorate is typically replaced with doctoral (as in the case of "doctoral dissertation"), though in official documentation the former is still used. The terms thesis and dissertation are commonly used interchangeably in everyday language yet it generally understood that a thesis refers to bachelor/undergraduate and master academic work while a dissertation is named for doctorate work.

In one project, I worked in an interdisciplinary team on strategic social policy. We each read 200 to 300 bits of data a day  (policy summaries, newspaper articles, and other short reports). We summarised the material as a five minute oral summary or occasionally we provided an one to two page report. My largest report for that team was 15 pages, including photos, tables and references. The project ran for six months, it included a review of over hundred empirical studies and reports as well as analysis of lengthy qualitative interviews that I’d conducted. Whittling the length to 15 pages was one of the toughest things I’ve ever done at a time when I was already used to writing in brief. The length of that report ended up being very controversial since policy makers hate reading anything longer than a two page Executive Summary. The reason why the report was 15 pages and not two pages was because my direct client wanted that extra detail. But I got away with it with other stakeholders because my short Exec Summary was deemed to be very useful. In large part, this was because the Exec Summary included a large table, which actually “hooked in” my broader policy audience.
